eve Posted April 16, 2011 Share Posted April 16, 2011 hi well my bluebell stopped eating and drinking now.very thin her eyes are bright but tail down she has been in isolation since tuesday and on antibotics from the farmer were i brought them from. my other two hens are lovely lay every day and double yolker every other day.do i just leave my bluebell to die or do i do the kind thing???? help??? For one thing it is illegal and for another, they might be inappropriate. We've had 2 of our hens ill twice since we got them 9mths ago. First time we had a limping hen, so we managed that ourselves. However last 3 times we've had a hen who was very quiet, fluffed up, eyes closed kind of thing so we felt we had no choice but to go to the vets and each time they've been treated with either pain killers, antibiotics or a combination of both and touch wood they are all still okay. (Had to use PDSA (out of hours service once) - vet there had little idea about chickens.) Ideally, its something to research before it becomes a necessity - there are good chicken vets out there. Battery Hen keepers call themselves farmers, though I wouldn't and loads of us use very competent vets, although there are a some who have had questionable and expensive treatments. There is another list also on Pract Poultry forum and ex bats forum. With a bit of luck you will find a good recommended vet on one of them. Alternatively if you don't want to wait for it to be emptied you could take her to your local council refuse centre.
