chickencam
We grow all of our carrots under enviromesh from sowing onwards, but the mesh blew off while we were away and we have well germinated rows so I am hoping that not too many got in. We are pretty much self sufficient in carrots and leave them in the ground all winter, we have sandy soil, they even survived this winter. LolaLayla
I tried to grow 'Fly Away' carrots to avoid the pests but this did not work. However last year I planted up some large pots that I got from Morrisons (they use them as buckets for flowers then sell them). I put them on a high shelf in my greenhouse and they were untouched. This year I have planted up more pots...not as many carrots that would last me the year but at least I am able to get some without holes! beach chick
I've given up on carrots... I plant the seed far too thickly, get loads of pretty top growth (which looks fab in pots!) and then get carrots so small they are practically invisible... Cinnamon
I always grow 'Fly Away' & *touch wood* have never had a problem with fly. I love growing my carrots,as they are so rewarding. You get baby ones from the thinnings too
Egluntyne
I always plant a marigold or two in with them, and have them in raised beds, and touch wood .........
chickencam
They do much better if you can grow them in a raised bed at least 18 inches off the ground because the fly only flies at low level.
Couperman
I have tried all the supposed ways to avoid the dreaded fly and the only one that works here is to cover them completely with enviromesh from sowing to harvest. I am not convinced that carrot fly only fly at low level either as I have tried growing carrots in an oil drum three foot off the ground and they still got "Ooops, word censored!"bled. Kev.
