Hi all,

 

Just a quick question, I was wondering if any of you have any ideas as to how I could prevent my hen Priscilla from drinking from the pond? The water is beyond filthy . It's this colour and is full of soil and dead frogs and there's a load of green scum floating on the top.

 

There's plenty of water all over the garden for her to drink. We make sure that the glug is clean and full, and we put little pots, re-used ice cream tubs etc full of water all over the garden, but she still prefers to drink from the pond .

She is looking for little bugs, newts etc. Mine stand in the pond - even the pekins I think if you cleared out the dead frogs and worst of the muck and try adding some barley straw to clear the water it would be safer for her

scarlettohara, when do you think the best time of year would be to completely empty out the pond, get rid of all the muck, clean it, and fill it again. I've been meaning to do it for a while but I don't want to do it while all the live frogs are still there.

What about some chicken wire around or over the pond until you get time to do it

It reminds me of our old german shepherd she would swim in filthy dikes and ponds but cower and cry when ever we even thought of giving her a warm bubble bath.

Ahhh my dad bought home a lot of wire fence panel things (No idea where he got them from ) today. I think they'll be great because the holes in them are big enough to let a frog squeeze through to they can still come and go as they please .

Now is OK, you just need to put the weed etc round the edge for 24 hours so any wildlife can crawl back in, you probably won't need to completely empty it- just get the worse muck out - it will soon clear naturally. Put some oxygenating plants back in when you refill it
