Hello clever Omlet people. I was just wondering whether any of you experienced dog owners have any advice for a newbie dog owner.

 

As you may know, Paddy arrived last Saturday. He is settling in really well. He hasn't done any night time poos or pees since last Tuesday. He is walking nicely - although I am not letting him off the lead until he has been "seen to" as he is quite an amorous chap!

 

Until a couple of days ago, we hadn't really heard him bark. Two nights ago he started once we put him to bed. I should say that he sleeps in the hall as there are wooden floors in there. It lasted about ten minutes.

 

Last night he really didn't want to get onto his bed in there. When he did go down, he started barking and whining and howling and it went on for about 40 minutes off and on. We don't have neighbours too close so at least it is only bothering us. We just left him as I didn't want him to think that the barking would achieve its aim of getting attention but it took me right back to when my kids cried at night!

 

I know that he wants to be with someone as he is very sociable but OH really doesn't want him in the bedroom with us.

 

I was reading about barking collars but I don't really like the sound of those.

 

Does anyone have any bright ideas??

Take him for a very long walk before bedtime that usually does the trick for both dog and owners.

You may find that a DAP plug in helps settle him. I wouldn't go down the anti bark collar route yet, it is more of a training and separation anxiety issue at the moment. There are loads of articles on how to deal with separation anxiety in dogs. Have a google and see what you come up with

We had the same thing with my choc lab. My oh didn't want him up-stairs but he would bark ALL night. We eventually got a cage, i know this sound cruel but he loved it and we never had a peep from him since. He's now 3 and we don't use cage anymore but he is really chilled.

I was going to suggest a crate as well. the idea is you make it into his special retreat, feed him in there sometimes, so that he associates it with good things, and try and encourage him to sleep in there during the day as well (with the door open at first). it needs to be big enough for him to stretch out, and have a cozy bed in there, but not big enough so he decides there's room to poo and pee as well ( ).

if you google dog crate use I'm sure you will find better instructions....!

we've got a rescue dog, just posted an update about her actually. We tried DAP spray, putting her bed in a crate and even squirting her with water and nothing worked. In the end i thought I'd try leaving a light on in case she was scared of being alone in the dark and that worked straight away! Not a peep since. Try a night light and see if that helps.

ohhh, the other thing that worked when my mum and dad had a new pup was either a loudly ticking clock, or a low vol radio - talk only tho!

Typical! - Jazz barks to let us know we've left a light on and she doesn't like it

 

I'm glad it worked for Paddy , I would still consider a crate as well though as they make life so much easier at other times as well, like staying away from home.We thought we'd get away with just the puppy pen as an enclosure last time we went away but Jazz wouldn't settle until we made a roof for it she is so used to sleeping in the crate.

molly hated being shut in her crate. She was okay with the door open so she could come and go as she wanted but she hated being shut in. Maybe that was because she was a rescue dog and had been shut up in a big cage/pen???

Our dog loves her crate, it got to the stage at one point when she'd bark at night if we didn't shut her in it! Like Poet says I think it's down to the individual dog as to whether they like them or not. We felt it got ours toilet trained in half the time and a crate comes in handy when going camping.
