Long overdue , but I put preservative on my WIR today. Quite pleased with the colour (unlike my new gate which is bright orange - not what it said on the tin ).

 

Question 1 - do you all paint the inside of your run too or is it just the bits that are exposed to the elements?

 

Question 2 - do you all give it 3 coats like the tin says? Do you really have to?

looks lovely! I am also interested in your questions, because am planning to paint mine in due course - but will only do outside as the timber is pressure-treated and according to mr beach chick shouldnt need anything doing to it EVER. mind you he doesnt understand about aesthetics!

Love the natural timber look,I've held off doing ours because I prefer it a natural colour.

I'm a complete numpty when it comes to DIY so I've no idea if it's the right kind of stuff or not but I bought a small tin of Ronseal Hardwood Furniture Stain just to see if I liked it. It's perfect as it just brightens the wood up without colouring it . Mine is 'clear natural matt' not 'dark rosewood' like the link.

 

I got a 750ml tin which has about 1/3 left after doing 2 sides (the hidden side is still to be done by YS who is doing Poultry Keeping as part of his Duke of Edinburgh ).

 

The wood was quite weathered and faded so I think it will benefit from at least one coat on the outside. I'm prepared to believe Mr beach chick so won't be painting the interior .

i got a tin of ronseal eco decking stain with linseed oil.

i have treated inside too as it was very dry looking, it dried really quickly and is low smell, i have to say i didn't notice any smell . I got beech and it is a nice light tan . pleased with it.

I used a product called Lifetime wood preservative on my recently completed WIR. I added thier dark oak woodstain to give the right look.

 

This product is supposed to protect the wood forever with just one water based coat. It is animal, human and environmentally friendly. Not cheap for a little powder but I have confidence in the product.

I asked 'Tony' about future treatment of my WIR when I brought it back in 2009. He said it shouldn't really need anything, ever, as the timber was pre-treated prior to construction. So, to date, I've not done anything. It still looks great, but is certainly less 'yellow' looking than when I first put it all together. It gets full sun onto the front face from midday onwards, but down here in Oxfordshire we don't tend to get the 'full on' bad weather you do in Scotland, so a little extra help is probably worthwhile in your case.

 

If I did ever get round to doing mine, I think I'd do inside and out eventually, but start with outside, as that's easier .

I wish I'd seen this thread yesterday morning - it would have saved me painting my new pressure treated wood WIR with the cheapest treatment I could find which unfortunately seems to be orange (called Autumn Gold). Oh well. I shall have to pretend that no one is reading this then buy an orange eglu and pretend it was a theme I was going for.

Do you want a gate to go with your orange theme? I also have a huuuge container of orange wood preservative too if you'd like that . "Antique Oak" my foot .
