well i have managed to talk the other half round that keeping chickens is a good thing. We have just moved tot he country and are renting right now but have bought a house with a bit of land and we hope to move in 5 weeks.

 

I was promised when we get our own place i could have chickens!

 

So we have booked a beginers hen course on the 4th of June with Elizabeth which i am so excited about i can not tell you. All being well we should then get chickens end of June once i have bought a pen etc.

 

Am still looking at what breeds to get and if i can mix breeds etc as this is all new to me.

 

Anyway thought i would come on here and say hello!

Welcome to the forum I am sure you will find it a mine of useful information and always worth a look. I have only had my chickens since February so am still fairly new to it myself - I have two hybrids - a Sussex Ranger and a Columbian Blacktail. Good luck with whatever you choose. I am sure you will love them whatever you get. Don't forget to post your pics as soon as you get started as we all love seeing each others' chooks, gardens etc. Good luck with your move - whereabouts in the countryside will you be?

We've only had ours for a year and the kids love running out looking for eggs and I enjy watching them busy around the garden!

I'm in Lincolnshire, near Market Rasen. Where abouts you moving to? You'll love lincolnshire I'm sure. My dog tends to keep her distance from the chooks after one attacked her

Lincolnshire is lovely, I am just next door in Nottinghamshire.

Enjoy researching, always plan for extra room for more hens as whatever you get will never be enough. Think about what coloured eggs you'd like, how safe they will be, what hens you like the look of. Don't be afraid to get a mix of hybrids and pure breeds. Would you like bantams? Some can lay eggs comparable in size to large fowl. So much to consider.

Getting set up can be expensive but you can do it on a budget (converted shed for a hen house for example).

Hope things go well with the house move and really pleased it comes with a bit of land, sounds perfect.

Not far away either in Derbyshire! Think about getting some ex batts, it's really rewarding seeing them recover. We have 5 now and plenty of eggs!

Going to get most of my feed from Cobbs Country store in Darlton, plus heard that you can get Auboise from an equestrian centre by M1 J31 (forget the name off hand).. have you used either of these?

yes I use cobbs for organic layers pellets, my lot love the omlet ones but the delivery costs are a bit prohibitive for me. I am nearly at the end of my first bag of aubiose so thanks for the info on where to get more. Sure you will be able to get other stuff locally, Central woolgrowers in worksop have a selection of poultry things and also superpets on gateford road I think may have odds and sods.
