Now Caramel's a Mummy too! (Pictures)

Recommended Posts

As I'm sure many of you remember, my Pekin Bantam (Biscuit) hatched five chicks over the Easter Weekend. A day or so before those eggs hatched, Biscuit's sister, Caramel, went broody. Just in case Biscuit's eggs failed (I had no faith at the time ), I let Caramel sit on some of her eggs. Friday was day 21, and although nothing happened that day, yesterday two of the six eggs Caramel was sat on hatched . So, in addition to our five Easter Chicks, we now have two more. One is very black, the other very brown (Dad is a black/orange frizzle pekin, Mum is a standard gold Partridge Pekin).

I don't think the other four eggs are going to hatch. Mum has been a bit useless in the mothering dept., she kept pooing all over the nest and eggs, so a high chance of bacteria infection killing any chicks that formed inside their shells early on. We're giving them another 24hrs, but will remove them for inspection on Tuesday if nothing has come of them by now.

Anyway, we're not worried, with 5/5 from Biscuit's clutch, and 2/6 from Caramel, we now have seven little chicks, which given we already have a flock of 8 hens and 1 cock, is more than enough to cope with right now .

As always, I've been out with the camera, so here's some early pictures.

I've put a series of other photo's on-line as a slideshow, which you can view by clicking here. I've also added a few additional pictures to the slideshow of Biscuits chicks, which are now three weeks old.

Oooooooooo Andrew they are utterly adorable :clap: .is that a little boy on top of the box

Yes, that one is certainly a boy and it's now clear that one of the other black chicks is also a boy. I'm pretty sure the third black one is a girl, along with one of the two brown chicks. I'm still not sure about the other brown chick, it will need another week to become clearer. Once I know 100%, the boys won't be staying much longer :(.

Loving the way the children's toy pots get drafted in as waterpots and is that a fire guard I see as their pen

Yep, correct on both counts! Re-use and recycle is the name of the game in our household . This evening I've been creating yet another separator so the new chicks can move out of the guinea pig hutch at the weekend and start living in the WIR next to Biscuit and her off-spring. A combination of the fire-guard and the new separator will keep all of them in view of each other, but well apart from each other at the same time.

My second batch of chicks are now five weeks old, and as the weather is so nice today I've let Caramel and her two chicks out to play in the garden.

They've been happy scratching around with the older chicks (although Caramel won't let the older chicks too close to her own), and for the most part my older hens have ignored them (they have all been within view of each other in the WIR since hatching, so their arrival is no great surprise).
