poppy33
Sadly we lost our Bovan and black rock girls last year, both aged 3 years, this left our Sussex all alone, she did not seem to be sad without the other girls, I think because she free ranges with our cat and dog all day however this is lovely in the summer while the kitchen door is open as she pops in and out and is very much a part of our family, my concern is in the winter when the door is shut and the cat and dog reluctant to venture out, I feel she will be very lonely so we have decided to buy some friends for Hettie, we thought about buying four chickens, we have a large WIR and a but plan to free range the girls as we did the others. Breeds I had thought of were; bluebell, a buff sussex and a Amber star . I love my sussex but would love a bit of info on the other breeds do the bluebells and Amber stars breed wreck gardens, our sussex has been so good with not destroying flowers, or is it just up to the individual chicken? I plan to divide up the large WIR in half so that the new girls are in one half and Hettie in the other, they will be able to see each other without attacking, I will of course have to make a temporary house for the new girls to roost, does this sound a reasonable plan? any information from other chicken keepers would be great. also one more question.. Hettie the sussex is now 3 years old and never lays... well we think she never lays, but have found walnut shells in the run and think Squirel may be squeezing through and stealing her egg he does run around the roof of the run. many thanks for any help Edited May 22, 2011 by Guest
