Tuftywatts
One week and two days ago 3 black rocks arrived at our home (Pauline, Norma and Little Ern) 21 weeks old. Now five eggs later (haven't checked today yet) we have 3 very well adjusted chickens. We can already pick them all up - they free range around the garden - come running to me as soon as I walk out the door and are just amazing animals. We've had so many visitors since they arrived and everyone has fallen in love with them. Can't believe what I've been missing all these years! Just thinking of buying some chicken mesh from Omlet so that we can pen them in one place and still let our beautiful Doberman out to the garden. Does this work for anyone else? Tom and Barbara
lol i LOVE the name little ern!!! we've found with supervision for a little while the dogs have got used to the chooks and can run around together - one or two sharp pecks on over curious noses did the trick
Olly
I'm delighted to hear this, as a Black Rock is what I'd like next - my local breeder has Bovans Nera which is a Black Rock X apparently (not sure what it's crossed with) I don't have experience of dogs, but the Omlet netting would probably not withstand a very excited dog rushing it at (specially one as big as a Doberman!) I hope you can work out a way to enjoy both dog and hens at the same time.
Tuftywatts
Thanks for the responses - Murphy Watts (the doberman in question) surprisingly enough doesn't usually touch gates etc. We have a small one in a our kitchen which he could easily push over but doesn't bother. He's also very old. Tufty x
Tom and Barbara
if he isn't of the bouncy puppy variety then you may well find that you can introduce them (perhaps on the lead at first) so they can run round together. it did take about four or so supervised 'meetings' with Ron and Flo but we did get there in the end. Ron (who loves the taste of chicken poo) decided to sniff the source of the chicken poo to try and get some on tap and got a beak firmly clamped to his nose, he hasn't bothered since! on the other hand if you would feel happier keeping them separate then it sounds like the netting or at least netting of some kind would be fine - i've no experience of the netting personally, mine would bulldoze straight through

debratugwell
My black rock is called Boots (as in Dora The Explorer) and she is ace. By far the friendliest of the three, very inquisitive, pecks everything (not viciously, just nosey) but she is lovely.
Rhapsody
.....and my BR is called Magnifico. Nuff said.
Egluntyne
Tuftywatts I love the names you have given your girls. They are very unusual....what's the story?
Tuftywatts
Can you believe that Norma is my Mum, Pauline is my mother-in-law and Little Ern is a very close friend (Stevie) nickname. Little Ern is the black one and so friendly - they all follow me around and would come into the house if I let them. Tufty xx P.S. Mum, Mother-in-Law and friend are all very flattered!!! Boots DOES come into the house. Frequently have to shoo her out as she tries to nick the cat's food and hubby would have a hissy if he saw chicken poo on the porch floor!!! She lets me know that she's not happy mind you as when I close the door on her, she just pecks really loudly on the cat flap. In the not too distant future, I know she'll be through it!!!!!!!! AJuff
I'm delighted to hear that your Black Rocks are friendly. My local chicken breeder says they are not child friendly at all. I keep hearing very conflicting views about them.

smudgley
I've read this with interest as we are getting some hens soon, but still undecided what to get. The pen & run is almost ready (just the finishing touches to do) & we are looking at different breeds. We know a lady with some young black rocks, but we've heard different stories about them too, although most very good ones. My hubby would like to get a couple of black rocks. But we're still pondering.
