Chooks76 Posted May 29, 2011 Share Posted May 29, 2011 I had a buzzard fly into my oak tree today. It's the first time I've seen one this close from my house in the 12 years I've been here. Normally they are just specks above as they circle. It's rather bigger than the sparrowhawk that comes into the garden from time to time! I think the chickens must have sensed its presence as they returned to the Eglu run and are still in there. I don't think it had swooped into the run or anything. That looks like the bird that swooped into our garden a few weeks ago It swooped right into the chickens free range area and took a wood pidgeon! Luckliy the girls were ok. Didn't know what it was till now! Never seen one before so close. We live in the outskirts of Liverpool.. It's like wildlife on one in our garden this last few months .. Rats.. Foxes and buzzards!! My girls are more worried about the sparrowhawks - probably because of the wild bird warnings. The first time they saw the kite they ran for cover, but they are more used to it now. The buzzards are welcome to any pigeons in my garden!!! The old Devonshire Traditional Breed Centre (before they moved/sold) had loads of buzzards close to the chickens there and there didn't seem to be any worries with their birds either. I guess if they wanted to, they could get chickens, but I feel at ease with them. If they took my birds (same with a fox) it would be sad, but that's the nature of the wild animals. Yorkshire Pudding Posted May 30, 2011 Share Posted May 30, 2011 No buzzards seen here but we have resident sparrowhawks and a few years ago there was a peregrine about. Luckily none of them seems interested in the chickens as there is a large population of collared doves along our street. The peregrine took all the white doves from one of the old houses (has a dovecote on the roof) - they haven't been replaced. Saw a Jay last week, first one ever, looking for fledgelings. The blackbirds were trying to dive-bomb it and making an almighty racket. It soon flew off as 3 pairs of blackbirds all went after it simultaneously.
