Recently, my chicken Peppa has started to go to bed in the nesting box. She's done it before a couple of times, but she's now started to do it every day. Is there anyway that I can prevent this? It's getting annoying as I must change the bedding every day because she's pooped on it during the night.

Someone on here suggested putting a large flowerpot in the way, but I don't know myself.

Someone more knowledgeable(?) will be able to tell you more.

Hi, can't find the old post but someone did suggest a flowerpot in the nesting box. Big enough so she can't get in. Hopefully she'll get the idea after a while

A flowerpot or a cardboard box will do - anything that blocks it off. Of course then you need to remove it early enough in the morning before they are ready to lay. The theory is that if you do this for a week or two, she will get out of the habit of nesting in there and you won't need to go on doing it.

 

Mine go through phases - at the moment "Ooops, word censored!"ody is sleeping in there, but I've had this problem in the past. I decided I'd rather clean the poo out than go through the business of blocking it/unblocking it eventually!

Had spells of it but just post them back in the cube when I shut the door for the night. Worth a try

I'll try putting a piece of cardboard between the nexting box and roosting bars tonight, hopefully it will work!

I'm having this problem at the minute with my new birds. I'm putting an up turned mop bucket in there, it has been very successful. I've only done it for 3 nights so don't know yet what will happen when I take it out, but they aren't laying yet so it's not so crucial for me.

I was wondering - with an eglu classic - if you left the nesting box as bare plastic without any bedding...would this stop them sleeping in it? Bedding could be put back in the morning for egg laying

The cardboard piece worked very well for me.

I placed it in before the roost, then I took it out as soon as I got up.
