Tigerlily
Hi all I am a complete novice but would love to learn to knit and crochet... I have the yarn and the needles... but what's best to learn 1st? Also - do any of you lovely crafty omleteers have any tips/advice or know of good websites where I can learn from/view easy patterns etc? Thanks so much in advance I am desperate to get cracking! PS have been looking at the things you have all made and think they are
freddie
I learnt to knit 1st but love crochet, as it's more portable. They both have their pluses, Start with big needles and chunky non fluffy wool, not too dark in colour, so you can see what you've done, are doing, and it makes it easier to unpick
Olly
I'd say crochet, as you're only dealing with one stitch at a time, as it were - with knitting you've got the whole row on your needle! It's hard to say as I learned both so long ago, but I reckon crochet is a bit more 'forgiving' if you go wrong as well. Somewhere in Crafty Fingers is a thread about learning to crochet, with some recommended books. Try the Ravelry website for patterns, it's brilliant. bluekarin
I found crochet much easier to get on with that knitting. It was a little tricky at the beginning, but you can do so much with just a very simple stitch, and I find I don't have the problems of dropping stitches and too tight loops on the hook (like I tend to with knitting)
craftyhunnypie
I'd say crochet also. As you can easily undo it if you wrong & it works up quicker! I learnt from you tube videos, but Americans call the stitches differently. So beware! An American single crochet is a UK double An American double is a UK treble Slip stitch is the same. I'd concentrate on these two stitches first, before attempting to learn any others. You can make a lot with just these. Good luck. PurpleTree
I've started to teach myself crochet too although haven't done anything for a little while. I bought the book Crochet Unravelled that was recommended on here. It's really good, with clear instructions and photos. I've managed to do a few granny squares using it
