Does anyone else find their appenzeller noisy?

Recommended Posts

I have a beautiful appenzeller that we hatched a year ago but she is so noisy. Anything seems to set her off and then she makes her noise for ages..... I'm worried my neighbours will complain. Does anyone else have this with appenzellers? We've got 9 hens but she's the only app. so I wondered if it was her or the breed? Also what should I do.... try to find her a new home?

The pure one I had briefly was as quiet as a mouse (only 20 weeks when she died) but the cross I've got can be a monster for shouting when she's got an egg brewing, she can go on all morning, once she's done it she shuts up. I too worry about the neighbours but they are all ok and find the performance funny. I explained that she doesn't do sharing the nest box and doesn't like the others to go before her and screams till they get out. What a madam.

Yes, Appenzellers are noisy, but they are so beautiful. I have a gold spangled one,Lulu, and also had a silver one, Fifi, beautiful girl, unfortunately she contracted IB and died, I miss her so much and if you were nearer I would jump at the chance to have yours if you can't keep her. I hope your neighbours don't complain, often it is you that is sensitive to the sound and the neighbours are cushioned by the fence, hedge etc.

My appenzeller/pekin is super-screechy! I relocated her to live with my LF as she was setting off the pekins every five minutes! She's much quieter now... except that she's broody at the mo and certainly lets everyone know it if they get near!!

My appenzellers are noisy in a wierd screechy sort of way, they stretch their necks like they are going to crow and out comes this dinosaur like, prehistoric whaaaahhhhhh. My OH says its like jurassic park down our garden

Dont know if theres anything you can do about it though :? A quick squirt of water may shock them out of it?

Chick Wiggle, that is a perfect explanation :D

Nyssa my appenzeller is a right gobby madam too, but not usually for no reason... she alerts the flock to potential dangers (anything from planes flying over head to the cat walking down the garden!), and shouts to get my attention, quite often by banging her beak on my kitchen window before she mouths off!!

Shes a real character though, so I forgive her

Mine always lay in the cube nest box, they can be a bit flighty but i hatched these myself so are quite tame and used to been picked up. One of them did, however, fly over a nearly 8ft hedge into the neighbours garden they other week  . We were at MILs when i got the phone call from my neighbour, great excuse to leave early  Im trying to train to it to jump over every time we go to MILs now!:lol::lol:
