A newbie's hobbies

Recommended Posts

Have been having a shufty around the forum and my eyes lit up when I found this. I love to see what crafty stuff people get up to.

I've always thought of myself as being a bit crafty since the days as a 10 year old when I used to beaver away at projects from my book '101 things to do on a rainy day'!

I'll have a go at most things and have always thought of myself as 'Jack of all trades but Master of none'! The one hobby I don't enjoy is sewing material which is odd considering the major hobby I have which started 7 years ago is beadweaving with a needle and thread! The past three months though have put this on a back burner while I try something new (aside from chickens!) - needlefelt sculpting.

Anyway here a few examples of stuff I have made over the years:

I'm currently working on a needlefelted model of my dog, a miniature labradoodle. A chicken may be next! Apologies for some large pics - Photobucket is not playing ball with my resizing.

Wow!! I've done a bit of beading, and really appreciate how fiddly, time consuming , and testing on the eyes it is!! Your stuff is lovely!

Love the bears, and the tiny penguin. have'nt done needle felting, would love to try it sometime!

Thank you both - the penguin was my first make.

I was showing them to a couple of friends in a local coffee shop when an elderly lady spotted the penguin. I ended up making her one and posting it as I didn't want to sell my very first creation - she had offered to buy it!

I was introduced to needle felting through another forum friend - I had never heard of it. It needs very little in terms of materials and they are easily available online. There are several books which show you how to do it and videos on You Tube.

I watched a tutorial of needle felting on you tube last night. Looks interesting and I'd love to have a go. Seems amazing that you can start off with a large ball of fluff and end up with a cute animal :o What fibre do you use, or can you use anything ie worn out pillow filling?

I'm using sheep wool - called rovings. Its all cleaned up and combed out. I bought a kit originally with beautiful breed sheep wools - then I bought extra wool mixed packs from Ebay. I've also tried dog hair which wasn't very successful - I made a bunny from that but he's very hairy!! I really am a beginner at this so I haven't tried lots of fibres - I believe there is an artificial one you can buy but I must admit I prefer the natural ones.

I've also got my eye on a herd of Llamas at a local pub!
