1 Bantam and 3 Standards - bullying?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am hoping to buy 4 chickens this weekend - a 14-week gold-laced Poland, and one each of Light Sussex, Salmon Faverolles and Welsummer, with all three of those being around 6-8 weeks old I believe.

Presumably the Poland will be a bit smaller- do you think the others, being standards, might bully it? Or will the Poland be tougher and become top dog because it's a few weeks older? This is my first flock and I'd hate to walk straight into chicken wars due to my lack of experience!

A Poland isnt a very good idea, chicks especially are drawn to the crest and can easily scalp a Poland in a few minutes :(

When older their eyesight is hindered by the crest and so they are vulnerable again

I'd maybe consider getting another breed chick the same age as the others, that way you remove the age difference problem and the Poland altogether

I have 4 standards and 1 bantam - and I have a Polish Silver Laced

They all get on great (apart from when Josie the bantam is in a bossy mood) and they were introduced at different times. They only squabble over grapes - otherwise - pretty harmonious.

I love Lola my Polish - she's a bit dim....but great fun to watch. During the very early introductions there was minimal picking - but everyone is good now...

My faverolle is such a sweetie - she's my real favorite
