emoss
Hello. I have a chicken with runny poo down her feathers under her bottom. SHould I wash heer bottom in case flies are attracted? Edited June 10, 2011 by Guest
chuckmum6
For hygiene sake I would say yes, a dirty bum will just spread disease to other chickens, a quick swill in some warm water is all that's needed.
Christian
I agree, best to get her washed and dried as flystrike can be a problem for hens.

chuckmum6
I have a Legbar who sometimes gets a bit messy, she quite likes being washed, I have trimmed a few feathers near her bum that were longer than the others, she is clean now!
Mercedes55
One of our ex batts has a really messy bottom lately. Twice this week we've given her bottom a bath in a bowl of warm soapy water. The first time we just let her back into the run and when she had dried out all the feathers were still all clumped together and she soon got all messy again. Today we dried her with the hairdryer on a cool setting, took some time, but she just sat on the garden table and wasn't at all bothered. She now has a lovely fluffy bottom, not sure how long it will last
daxigirl
Moomin's getting a bum wash this morning. She enjoys it a bit to much I think, as she'll stand and nap on the draining board afterwards with her nice fluffy bum. My advice is to clear the window sill before you start and have a towel and the hair dryer plugged in ready to go.
Egluntyne
My advice is to clear the window sill before you start .... I'll second that. I do it outside when I can, using the 3 bucket method. One for washing and two rinses.
