Coccidiosis help please

Recommended Posts

Today I have found blood in the chick coop. I'm pretty certain it was not due to any injury, there's only two chicks (boy & girl) and they seem to be getting along fine. The blood was kind of on a dropping rather than in it ... very red and fresh. I have found another two patches the same, one inside and one outside the coop in their pen ........the majority of droppings look normal. At the moment I think it's only one chick producing blood and am quite confident it's only started in the last day at the most.

So, to be on the safe side I've added coxoid to their water and will continue with that for seven days.

They have been out in a pen on grass sometimes where my other bantams go (including the hen who hatched them). Should I treat them with coxoid too (no symptoms from what I can tell - although they free-range all the time so I can't inspect every stool they do  ) ? And, is there anything else I need to do??

TIA, Sarah

Not sure of answer but the others are probably immune and who the chicks picked it up from. You can probably afford to observe them. I think you are doing the right thing treating all the chicks.

I would clean the ground though to reduce the eggs by sprinkling garden lime on the garden or stalosanf or other poultry disinfectant in the run and housing.

Ditto, I lost a chuck to suspected Coccidiosis just after Christmas. I treated all the other chooks just to be on the safe side and I have a bird feeding station, (the possible suspect) so I cordoned this area off from the chooks with plastic mesh and regularly treat the area with stalosan f as well as sprinkling in their coop and pen. You can never be too careful. If you're vet is well up on chucks, it may be worthwhile asking him/her for some Intradine 30.89%, it's mainly for cattle, so not registered for chooks but it is a strong solution which get's on top of things pretty much immediately. However, it is quite expensive at £25 a bottle but the results are worth it. Good luck with you chooks and hope they get well soon.

Thanks :)

As I said, I have started the chicks on Coxoid and have got some Bio-dri to sprinkle around.

Having read more about it and weighing the pros and cons I have decided to treat all my hens. I have one Bantam who seems well but I have noticed that her feathers seem to be getting paler and she is a little quiet (although I put that down to being last in the pecking order usually) ............ and I have another hen (Speckledy) in another part of the garden who is quite unwell, I thought it was sour crop, I took her to the vet but she couldn't say what was wrong with her  but I did isolate her in part of the chick's pen while I was treating her for sour crop :wall:

 that the chicks get over it and survive.

Also if you are not sure they are drinking (often don't if under the weather) use some of the mixture to either directly syringe in or put on something you KNOW they will gobble up.

Apparently you should see improvement in 2 days. I had a VERY poorly girl I treated with 1ml coxoid mixture with CC solution every hour for day one. then 2/5 /10 ml every 1 2 or 3 hours depending on what she was doing /where she was etc. (this was a should have been 2kg ex bat..
