Coastal(ish) campsite in Kent, Suffolk or Norfolk?

Recommended Posts

Calling all campers!

Knowing there are lots of omlet campers out there I need some advice. I've got a long weekend coming up, end of July into August and I'd like to go camping. It'll just be myself and OH with our dog. Our friends may also come along and they have two dogs. No children between us (Unless you count OH!).

Firstly I know it's going to busy considering the time of year so will have to book something quickly, but secondly I'd like some opinions on the best place to camp.

* Needs to dog friendly (She's not great with farm animals like sheep or cows so a farm site is probably not the best)

* Preferably coastal - or at least nearish to the beach. Oh and the beach needs to be dog friendly for this time of year.

* Walking distance to a pub. (OH's request!)

We were thinking of maybe Kent, Suffolk or Norfolk. Anywhere that isn't too far a drive away in case the weather is abysmal and we can pack up and go home if needs be.

Any advice greatly received.

Stacey xx

I am guessing you mean the beach? The dogs allowed section is accessed by using the steps that go up and across the pinewoods Which are reached through the gate at the bottom of the car park by the path next to where the boating lake. The dogs allowed section stretches from the ice cream kiosk situated half way down the beach to Holkham as well as the dunes on wells beach. I am sure the site office must have it on one of there info maps email them or give them a ring. Last weekend in July start of Aug is the start of carnival week I will be there myself come and say hello :D

Another vote for North Norfolk here

High Sand Creek campsite in Stiffkey is nice, pretty basic field type camping but the shower block is clean and water hot :D and its dog friendly if I remember correctly

The excellent local pub is a 10 min walk as is a small basic store

Wells next to the Sea and Cley are nice places for a visit

Love it up there in North Norfolk, we've been there loads. Yes, KK I meant beaches, sorry.

Just mentioned your site to OH only to be told 'We've done Wells before, lets go somewhere different'.

Sooo, looks like no meet up and chicken talk. Rah. Liked that idea.

He has a friend in Lincolnshire and has just told me he'd like to go up there now. Honestly, he keeps moving the goalposts! LOL

So I guess I'm now looking at the skegness, sutton-on-sea area. Went to skegness butlins as a child, all i remember was that it rained everyday. Is the area nice does anyone know?

Southwold is nice Olly, my mum regularly stays in a cottage in Dunwich, not far from there.

I love Dunwich :). They have great fish n chips there (in the top 10 in the country), and a lovely place to go for a walk.

I dont really know so much about camping, but caravaning - what about Hopton-On-Sea, or Hemsby (East Norfolk), near Great Yarmouth.

Camping - I think theres somewhere in Burgh Castle, near Yarmouth, that has a campsite.

Just found a pic of my mum's friend's dog while doing a search for dog friendly suffolk beaches. They have a static in Dunwich and her husband regularly fishes off the beach and walks the dogs there. A few years back they found a fossilised mammoth bone and a cracking shot was taken of 'Daisy' licking her chops at the find for the local and national press. Look here and scroll down to the dachshund. Made me smile. Bless her.

Anyway, I'm still looking around. I'd like somewhere closer like suffolk or a part of Norfolk we've done before, maybe the broads. OH still kinda wants to visit his mate (He sees him at work all the time anyway! )

It's amazing how many websites don't have info like nearest pub or if beaches are dog friendly.

I think I've disuaded my OH from Lincolnshire because of how far it is for just a little weekend trip. I've found this site although it isn't especially cheap. But then I am leaving it last minute at peak time so it's my own fault. Thought it'd be a nice base for Southwold, Aldeburgh etc. What do you guys think?

How bizarre we stayed on there a few years ago when attending a Family wedding it is a nice site OH has relatives in leiston & kelsale and he was born in nearby Knoddishall he used to stay with his gran in the holidays and bike to Alburgh,Dunwich and all around. There is a campsite in Aldeburgh (church farm) which we used to stay on many many years ago,do visit Thorpness if you end up in Suffolk and also see the house in the clouds. For OH it is like going home and I love it for the slow pace of life :) You must have fish & chips from Alburgh chippy and Dunwich cafe on the beach
