Scooch
Hello All, After much research and thinking we've decided to get some chooks. I've decided on getting a Classic and either two or three chickens. I've picked out a spot in the garden and have gotten the OH to agree on the whole thing! Yay! Now here's my question, due to upcoming holidays and the arrival of a new puppy in October the earliest I could get the chickens would be November. Does that mean I'd be better off waiting till the spring? I've heard that chickens often stop laying through the colder months and so maybe I should wait til late Feb/early March? Any advice would be great. thanks Scooch
Egluntyne
I'd say you would be better off waiting till spring. There won't be much in the way of POL stock available at that time of year.
Henergy
yes if it was me I'd wait. I'm not an expert of availability of POL hens, but I'd say it was better to get them when the weather is starting to get warmer & brighter. That way you can get into a good routine for you without contending with November weather. Good luck with the puppy - we are 10 months away from getting ours !!!!! Very excited
Scooch
Thanks for the info. I figured waiting for spring would be the best move and Lisa good luck with your puppy too. We got a pup 14 months ago and had so much fun we are getting another! All the best Scooch
Margaret
I would leave it until spring, cant even belive i would say that But, I added 3 to my flock when I came back from holiday and they are nowere near as tame as my old girlies, as mornings and nights were dark when I got home from work, so didnt spend much time with them, also weather was horrid, and one thing to put you off chook keeping is the winter weather so start in the spring fall in love with them and will happily suffer the horrid weather but other way around you may think what have I done
karlotta
I'd advise waiting till spring too... it'll give you time to teach the puppy some basic obedience before throwing an exciting distraction into the mix!
Chortle Chook
I would leave it until spring, cant even belive i would say that But, I added 3 to my flock when I came back from holiday and they are nowere near as tame as my old girlies, as mornings and nights were dark when I got home from work, so didnt spend much time with them Hey that explains why two of my girls have been less friendly than the others as I got them in November, and you are right, I didn't have time to watch them much and dig them worms etc.
counturchickens
I agree, spring! At least you won't be freezing your bits off when you're spending your time watching them!
