lrh
Hello, i'm sorry if this is in the wrong place. I know this is for chickens but couldnt see a goose thread. My wee hen got killed and so I bought three brecon buff geese. They were only in their wee run a few hours and my neighbour suggested i let them out for grass. When I let them out they flew off : ( I managed to get one of them back and now I don't know whether to clip her wings. I wonder if she might be wild. The woman i bought her From seemed very genuine. She was also selling ducks and hens and she assures me they were domestic geese. What should I do? Should I clip her wings?
Snowy
Hi and welcome to the forum I'm afraid I don't know about geese, but hopefully someone in the know will see this and be able to offer advice.
Ian 6
Hi, You may have seen my post about geese not going in the house! Mine are 2 brecon buffs and one x with a chinese. To my limited knowledge Brecon Buffs rarely fly as is the case with some domestic breeds as they are too heavy for long flights. I kept mine in a large covered pen so they got use to new surroundings as I thought they might try to wander off looking for there old homes. I have been to a number of goose owners places and all the rare breeds were kept outside with no cover. I suggest you contact the 'Goose Club' for experienced advice which can be found if you use a search engine (they do not have a website) Hope this helps. Redwing
I think Ian is right, unless the birds are 'bonded' to their home I guess they could well just fly away. Brecons are a domestic breed not a wild one When people buy chickens we often recommend to keep them confined to a run for at least a week or so before letting them range and I guess geese are really no different I'd go back to the supplier for advice re wing clipping as you dont want to make your goose more vulnerable to predators and it could be that once she knows where home is there is far less chance of her flying away The Practical Poultry forum has plenty of geese owners who may be able to offer further advice good luck
lrh
Thank you for your replies. My neighbour has geese and no cover so I hadnt thought that I'd need to cover the garden and now I feel guilty because at the moment she is couped up in quite a small space - a makeshift area from chicken wire and an eglu run : ( I dont think she is going to want to stay if I dont clip her wings. My neighbours have seen the two that flew away in the sea near the beach here and I think i have heard her calling to them. Thanks for the goose club and other forum advice. I will try them.
