The beautiful blue eggs laid by my Araucana have recently been spoiled by unsightly crusty lumps on the outside of the shell. It doesnt actually bother me - they still taste delicious, but the appearance os off putting for some people - my sons wont touch them - saying that they look like warts!!! Is there anything I am doing wrong to cause her to be laying eggs like this?

Nope - my Speckledy hen, who is around 4, lays eggs like this and I believe it's common in older hens, it's just part of the laying process. I'd keep those lovely blue eggs for yourself and sell them the other ones!

i have this sometimes - I had read somewhere that it is calcium deposits on the shell.

I have a similar problem...I refer to it as sandpaper eggs...my deposits are small. These eggs are laid by a 'Problem' buff Orpington. She either lays these every other day for a fortnight before going broody or lays soft shelled eggs for a couple of weeks before starting the cycle again. Fed layers pellets, very occasional bread or fruit treat and plenty of grit and shell available.

Just calcium deposits form a hen who has an over-active shell gland. Nowt you can do about it but enjoy the eggs.

Mavis often lays eggs that look like she's been painting the ceiling (white speckles) - eat them and enjoy them!
