mouthybird
Hi all, My characterful black Maran hen's left eye has recently started to produce a bubbly, spit-like discharge, in the corner. I noticed today that the area between her eye & beak has started to look quite swollen too. I'm currently treating her for Scaly Leg Mite (poor old girl), but that aside she's in good health, eating well, laying well, foraging well, good colour to her comb, no wheezing, rattling or nasal discharge, and healthy poop! Any idea what this might be & how to treat it? Thanks in advance...
Chucky Mama
It could well be mycoplasma, I would pop her along to a vet as she may well need a course of antibiotics.
mouthybird
Thanks Chucky Mama. Just been doing some internet research into Mycroplasma & the pics I've uncovered look like what my girl, Lady Gaga, has. I'll get her to the vets for attention. Any idea how infectious it might be? I've got 2 other hens in with her & I'm worried about them now. We've been on holiday for 2 weeks & I'm pretty sure Lady Gaga started displaying a slightly weepy eye the day before we left. I'm cross with myself now for not giving her closer attention before we went.
Chucky Mama
It is pretty infectious and ideally she should be isolated. However, if she is an older hen it is quite possible that she is a carrier and either stress or some other factor has lowered her defences and allowed it to come to the fore. If she is indeed a carrier, your other hens may be too if they have always been together. I think it is probably wise to isolate her all the same.
