pumkinsmummy
Hi there. I have a Red Island that over the last 3-4 months has decreased her laying so that now she is laying every 4 - 5 days. She is only just over 1.5 yes old, she has the same diet/environment/housing as the others who are laying, she looks v v v well, does not appear to be fat, ill, broody, moulting or fed up. What is stopping her laying eggs? I would love to know otherwise she will have to be re homed ...
Olly
Have your hens been wormed recently? Other than that, if shes healthy and eating the same as the others, no ideas really. Although 1.5 is not that old, it's possible she may have just reached the end of her laying life. There's a reason why most battery hens are replaced at or before this age - laying is just less reliable. I'm afraid the question has come up on here before and it's almost impossible to find someone who wants to take on a 'spent' hen, and it's one of the reasons we no longer allow rehoming requests on the forum. If you don't feel you can afford to keep a non-layer then it would be kindest to cull her.
Treacle
I have 2 ex-bats that I got in May that have not laid an egg since I got them and also a Rhode red who is the same age as yours who stopped laying about a month ago. So out of 4 chickens I am getting 1 egg per day
