jenjins1 Posted August 30, 2011 Share Posted August 30, 2011 Typically been away on holiday for three weeks and come back to find one dead and another one very sick. Have sprayed and sprayed and even soaked the hens in red mite liquid spray but they seem to be everywhere. Scared that am going to lose more. Any advice or tips greatly appreciated. Thanks.... Thats why ive not seen many during the day and even explains why two of them are not taking themselves in at night. Olly Posted August 30, 2011 Share Posted August 30, 2011 Definitely - keep treating the coop so that you break the mite's life-cycle, but night-time is the worst time for attack. If they're in a secure run you could just lock them out of the coop for a few nights, they won't come to any harm - roosting outside. Could you put a branch or two in for them to roost on? Thanks It is, as it isn't licensed you would either need a vet to prescribe it for you. You could buy it online but that way you are on your own as far as back up and advice goes. I would be wise to boost them generally as they will quite possibly be anaemic. Adding a good tonic such as Lifeguard, Avi-Tonic, Avian Electrolytes or any decent supplement will help. Keep stress and any exertions to a minimum. Keeping them warm and quiet will prevent them from using up valuable energy keeping warm and moving around. Good Luck. I'd 'nuke' the coop with a permethrin based product which will be sure to kill the mites, then repeat it every 3 days until they are all gone. Then a programme of cleaning and powdering (i have found the total mite kill concentrate and buz busters combo to be very good) will keep them at bay.
