CrazyDaizy
Today is the third day that Malibu (aged about 2) continues to sit on the nest in the Eglu (we put her there on a heated pet warmer pad) She eats and drinks all that is offered to her. I got her out and stood her up this morning, and she can't take the full weight on her feet. There's white feathers around the garden, but not sure if she's been bullied by our other chicken and the rabbit (Malibu doesn't get on with the rabbit, so maybe she's been caught in a kerfuffle with him) So.... as I say, day three and more nursing her back to health. Waiting on her hand and foot. Our vet is not good with chickens and last time (only time) we took another chicken to the vet, the chicken died on the examination table in front of our eyes. NOT going through that again! Our two chickens were wormed in July. Malibu's rarely laid eggs and has always been a "wierd" chicken. Unsociable and often does her own thing away from Amber (other chook) There was an egg in the nest yesterday, but we think Amber snuggled in beside her to lay it Malibu seems to be pooping ok, though often has a dirty butt! How many more days do we continue like this? Any help and ideas would be gratefully appreciated.
Olly
Sorry but if three days have elapsed and she can't stand up, then I think she needs to see a vet. You say you are 'nursing her back to health' but in fact her condition is not improving, is it? Unless you know what the problem is, it's difficult for you to do anything, but a hen that isn't able to run around/peck about is not normal, and I think veterinary intervention is your only option at this stage. Maybe there's another vet you could take her to?

I'm working tomorrow, then it's the weekend, so today's a good day for getting it sorted. Will keep you posted.
CrazyDaizy
Took Malibu to the vets, and the vet was lovely (Made a note of her name, will definitely see her again!!!) She noticed straight away Malibu had quite a swollen tummy. I had noticed this too just by lifting her up, but I wasn't sure if it was just food as I have no idea what to look for. Left her at the Vet for about an hour as they needed to "warm" the x-ray machine up (must've been an old machine ) When we returned, we were shown the x-ray. There was a strange egg shape by her leg. It was irregular shaped, like a shattered egg. The vet thinks it may have been a broken egg stuck in her ovary in a rather "unusual" way. She said she COULD operate but it would be difficult and it would put the chicken under undue stress. There was no guarantee that IF she survived the operation, the same thing would not happen again. So, we did the kindest thing RIP Malibu. Has anyone else ever heard of anything like this?
Olly
So sorry to hear that - at least you know that there was nothing more you could do for her. I've heard of eggs breaking inside, and it can lead to all sorts of problems so I think your vet was right - she may well have had an infection. As a result. I've not had that problem with one of my own hens but I have read about it on here, someone else might have more information.
