serenlas
Laid an egg? I know it's a 'how long is a piece of string' question but I'm impatient and was wondering how long other people have waited for an egg from their Omlet supplied chooks Do their wattles & combs usually go BRIGHT red before it happens? My 3 girls are at various shades of pinky red, I think the one that still has some white fluffy 'baby' feathers has the reddest ones! Olly
Some people are lucky enough to have an egg laid on the first day ... as far as I recall, I waited about three weeks, receiving interested and then frankly scornful text messages from my friends every day enquring about progress! POL is a term which covers anything from about 18 weeks to 22 weeks, so the exact age of the hens varies, and then some hens will lay at 18 weeks and others won't lay till they are a bit older, so it really depends on a lot of factors. The comb doesn't have to go bright red, the best indications I've found are (1) crouching down when you put a hand over them and (2) suddenly eating like mad. Hang on in there, it won't be long! serenlas
OK thanks, one of them did crouch when my friend tried to stroke it's back the other day, so maybe it won't be long We only got them 3 days ago but the children and I are checking 19034546 times a day I can't wait! Olly
Start planning how you're going to cook that first egg - it will be worth the wait, I promise.
Purplemaniacs
I think it was three to four weeks. It will be worth the wait. Three and half years on and it is still exciting to find eggs when I get home from school. How are you going to cook the egg? Are you going to weigh it, I record the weight of all the eggs so I know how many in total we have had and how many each chook has laid. I find it interesting but perhaps a bit sad I hope the wait isn't too long, if one is crouching it should be quite soon. Chrissie
serenlas
I don't believe it.. we had our first egg!!! I sent the kids out to open the Eglu and check for eggs and my 4 year old came running in saying "I've got some REALLY good news!" I had a feeling, because our was seen coming out of the Eglu during the day yesterday, and someone kept pulling the shredded paper out of the nesting area. 35g I scrambled it with butter for my daughters to share, although the little one claimed not to like it?! Oh well, all the more for 7 year old and me!! Is it safe to cancel my box of eggs in Monday's grocery order now?
Olly
congratulations! I'd keep the order for now - they can be a bit unreliable for the first week or so! I STILL get a little thrill when I find the eggs, even now.

Purplemaniacs
Congratulations What a lovely surprise for your children I bet it was a lovely yellow scrambled egg. Like the others I wouldn't cancel your egg order yet. Chrissie
