Closing the coop in winter

Recommended Posts

I have been leaving the Eglu door open since we had our ladies so they can go to bed and get up at will. the run is securely pegged down and so is safe for them. The nights will be getting colder soon - at what temperature should we shut the Eglu door for warmth? My husband says they'll be ok anyway since in the wild they'd roost in a cold tree! Is he right? Can we leave them open all winter?

They may well be ok but some breeds are so far removed from the original wild jungle foul that they can no longer be compared to be honest. As long as your birds are in good health they should be ok though. However on the very cold nights (we got into minus double figures during the day last winter) I did close mine up. I also put snuggle safe pads in to help prevent frost bite but most would say you don't need to bother with this.

I also leave my eglu door open all night, but i think i will start to close it when it gets colder.I am going to get a heat pad in case it gets really cold.

I have 2, one for the chooks at night and then when I go down in the morning I put the other one under their water to stop it freezing. They are brill and cheaper on ebay
