Hunched up hen

Recommended Posts

Delilah (the one who doesnt lay) was hunched over today - she is the one with a pooey bum. Shes been fine but this morning she looked hunched over. I am taking her to the vets thursday - I dont know what else to do. Shes been wormed, and given best care I could. Sadly at work all day so unable to do much else and OH at home with sick child.

I love having hens but get upset when they seem to deteriorate rapidly despite best efforts. Shes not old - 2yrs - sorry just feeling a bit fed up. I know I;m not the only one who feels it when her girls are under the weather.

Yes I fear the worse and after loosing her sister to it at Easter I think I will opt to have her PTS. I really found it hard when I found hersister dead the next day. She hasn laid for months - vet said on phone prob just at end of laying life. she ate a few meal worms today - I feel awful as I have been working and Oh stuck in with YS whos sick so shes taken a back seat.

Gloria is exactly the same and has been for about 2 weeks. Took to vets. Got some Baytril which she has had for nearly a week now. Also got some liquid parrafin as her crop was a bit full when we went to the vets, but that was at 6 at night.

One minute hunched up, the next rootling about with her sister and would rip your arm off to get a grape.

Vet couldn't find anything really wrong - she has not laid for about a month now and she is 2 1/2 so I thought possible Peritonitus - but she doesn't have the symptoms that I have researched on the internet. However, she is quieter than she has been. :(

When her quality of life is no longer there, then we will make the awful decision to do the right thing, but looking at her now, rootling about in the run, I can't take that step and take her on her journey to chook heaven.

Sending big hugs x x

Thanks and you. I am somewhat confused - she stopped laying during moult but still hasnt fully recovered from moult - has been well until this last week. Should I have worried re lack of eggs - shes not broody or wasnt ill till now. Am I leaving it too late before I worry - my other hen who died laid softies for weeks and 4 days before she died she laid a proper egg.

Vet said some just stop laying normally and not to worry but shes not well now.

Bum was dirty so we gave her a warm bath and dried her - didnt stop he clucking crossly and trying to peck me but then she snuggled up in the chair next to me to soak up rays. This is the hen who hates beind handled

If she could talk she'd be saying "B :silenced::silenced::silenced: ds" she was soo funny. Anyway vet tommorrow - wanted to see chicken vet - will keep posted - thanks for good wishes = hope your girls recover too

Gloria is still not right, so am off to the vets tonight. I am praying that the Vet will give her a miracle cure and she will turn into the feisty loud chook she has been, but I fear that isn't a reality.

Let us know how you get on with the Vets today.

More big hugs and good luck vibes coming your way.
