Hi

 

I want to recover some cushions and I'm not sure what quality/weight of cotton fabric would be suitable.

 

I am considering this

Would this be suitable or do I need something thicker ??

I would suggest something a bit thicker, but someone else might know different! It looks similar to a cotton lining, and might not be very hard wearing.

 

I would probably use more of an upholstery fabric perhaps?

I agree. Normal 'cotton' fabric like that would be similar to your bed sheets in weight, so not really substantial enough for cushion covers, plus the inners would be visible through the fabric. Look for curtain or upholstery fabric instead.

I usually use Linen Union - a mix of linen and cotton, which is thick and more durable.

I use tea towels to make my cushion covers, They are just the right size to make an envelope style cover

with some buttons and loops for fastenings.

You can get some really cheap and pretty ones or dye old one in the washing machine.

The old farmers wife comes out now and again.

If you can get into town Hazel, there are some great fabric stalls on the market, or there is a huge fabric store underneath the Lee Circle car park (behind Wilkinsons)

Otherwise try Abakan.

Charity shop curtains . they are usually fairly good quality, and make heaps of things! I use old dresses and all sorts!

Personally I would think that fabric would be okay for cushions. I made one recently out of my daughters old school dress as it was a lovely red gingham with a white rick rack ribbon around the hem which I managed to incorporate into the edge of it. If it is a thinish fabric then maybe make a calico or plain cotton liner for the pad and then use your chosen fabric as the cover.

I love the idea of using teatowels to make cushion covers I shall be on the lookout now I have discovered a beautiful fabric shop here in Bath which has the most achingly beautiful fabrics and buttons and ribbons and gorgeous little felting kits (which I may have to buy one after seeing someone elses felted dogs on here)
