Help Urgently Needed

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Woke up this morning to find our 6 month old RIR with lots of blood on the feathers around her vent, she laid an egg this morning and there was a spot of blood in the nesting. I thought she had prolapsed but on inspection the vent looked normal. We've washed her in warm water and put her back in the run as both my husband and I work however I'm really confused and don't know what's happened. If anyone can shed some light it would be much appreciated as I'm worried sick.

Thanks!

Hi, sorry to hear about your girl. Was it a particularly large egg that she laid this morning? If her vent was looking normal, and there was no more bleeding after you had washed her, it may just have been a very big egg that caused the bleeding. It has happened to me (well to my hens!) once or twice, although not as much blood as that.

I would have another good look at her later when you get back from work, just to check that all is ok. I suppose she may have prolapsed, and it has gone back in by itself, if that's possible.

This can happen with a large egg sometimes, as said above I would just check later that all is ok. Does she seem bright, is she pecking around and looking generally interested in life? If so then she's probably ok, but do keep an eye out because if she is laying very large eggs, she could prolapse.

Thank you both for your replies.

She has laid really large eggs in the past but today's was normal size and she seemed OK. We are taking her to the vets later on this afternoon so will keep you posted. I'm hoping it's nothing serious as she's still really young only 28 weeks and the kids will be devastated as they are our first chickens :o(

Fingers crossed x
