Fencing - large areas

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm investigating fencing! We will soon be moving to a property with land. It's currently fenced with post and barbed wire which is in need of repair and replacement. I might like to keep some livestock at some point and get a dog. I would like the area to be secure too.

Does anyone have any recommendations. I will be needing to do it on a budget but would rather do it properly so it lasts even if that means spending more. Has anyone fenced a field by themselves? The area will be about 4 acres and as far as Im aware we will need to do 3 sides.

Thanks

Will you be having a Wynnstay or Countrystore near you? They are very good. We are lucky as our neighbour is helping us with doing the stock proof fencing - he puts something on the back of the tractor to knocks the posts in. Other than that, there are companies that will come & do it all for you. Shop around though! It is just posts, barbed wire, wire mesh on a roll, metal hooky thingies & something to bash the posts in with! They have it all at the above mentioned farm outlet stores.

Good luck!

Thanks very much. I will have a look for a country store. I definitely think full posts will be best too as I want it to last. I was wondering how strong you need to be to bash in a post. I guess it depends on what the ground is like as well. Despite trying very hard I am so pathetically weak I doubt I could manage to push it down far enough. Still, worth a try & hopefully I won't end up in hospital!!!

Just got to wait for all the moving stuff to happen now!!!

Thanks xx

Depending on what you're keeping in there you could also consider electric fencing, so you could move it around the field.

Post and rail may also work but not sure if thats a cheaper/more expensive option - again depends what you're keeping in there.

Get yourself a Fence Post Driver ... makes things easier.

Make sure the wire netting is as tight as it can be, might need some rope and a couple of people, to pull it tight and one to nail it to the fence posts.

We had to fence acres and acres to keep the sheep in, when we were Lambing ... soon gets tiring
