auntielizzie
Carrying on from my previous post "Bessie not laying - any ideas"; Bessie hasn't laid for a whole week now. I don't think she's broody - I haven't seen her doing much of the sitting thing she was doing for the last couple of days. I don't think its worms and I don't think its lice. I have spent all morning thouroughly cleaning out the house - completely stripped it down and all new bedding etc put in. Diatom everywhere. Ground sanitiser applied. Chickens dusted with lice powder. Sterilised food and water containers. Clean dustbath. Raked all round the run/house outside area and got rid of all stones, sticks, apples from apple tree, poo, etc etc. Fresh cabbage hung from vegetable patch. Fresh food, fresh water. Lovely sunny morning. Chickens free ranginging while all this going on for a good three hours. What more could a chicken want? Bessie now having nice dustbath under the bushes. Only think I can think of is maybe pre-moult as someone suggested Otherwise, I am at a loss. She is fine in every other way. She is a Rhode Sussex hybrid and quite a big heavy bird. Maybe she's just winding down for the winter. I really miss her lovely eggs though - although smaller than Betty's eggs, I always thought Bessie's were the most perfectly formed compact little eggs and of course very yummy! Sorry for long post I'm probably making a big fuss about nothing.
lindafw
Chin up its probably just that winter is on the way. My girls are hardly laying..two Dorkings in moult, one Buff orp is never reliable and lays loads of softies before going back on strike, two aracanas are not grown up enough and neither are the two polands, so only the buff sussex is laying!
