peachachecha
What is chutney and how is it used? This is not something we use over here. I have seen all the posts of people making chutney and am curious and would enjoy trying it. Is there a type of chutney that one should never be without, that can be used in many ways? Olly
I think it's a peculiarly British thing! Basically it's vegetables and fruit cooked in sugar and vinegar to make a sort of condiment - the word chutney is Indian I believe, but I'm sure it existed before then. It's usually served with cold meat or pork pie or similar. Delia Smith has a recipe for Christmas Chutney which I often use, I've also got a very old one from a family friend for apricot chutney made with dried apricots, almost anything goes but it's usually made in the autumn to use up fruit and vegetables that can't be stored - green tomatoes are a popular one as it's a good way to make use of them. Thanks Olly! The Christmas Chutney looks good. If I can find the allspice berries I will give it a try. Will look for a green tomatoes one next year. I make a green tomatoe mincemeat that I like on occasion. Your apricot chutney sounds good too.
Cinnamon
It is a pickle really, but with a mish mash of fruits & vegetables - quite wonderful if its a nice one & there is nothing better than a great chutney with mature cheddar & a hunk of bread It is a very autumnal thing here,& usually involves autumn fruits like apples & plums. I am a beginner to chutney making as I made my first batch last year but it is great to use up fruit etc

Space Chick
You need to store for 3 months for them to be at their best really we found some runner bean and courgette (zucchini) chutney we made in August 2009 at the back of the cupboard... It is perfection now
