Lavenders_Blue
I am about to buy a Drontal Plus tablet as Tango is due to be wormed. The dose appears to be 1 tablet for a dog up to 10kg or 2 tablets for 10kg+ Tango weighs 10.7kg so do I need 2 tablets or can I get away with just one? I am assuming that Drontal Plus is a good wormer - if anyone can recommend anything better please do let me know!
Ain't Nobody Here
Drontal is what we use (I just get it from the vets at Riley's annual "service"!) I'd say only use one as she's so close to the 10kg limit. Riley was quite skinny when we rescued him and put on a bit of weight quite quickly, so I'd check her weight again the next time you need to worm her. The Dogmother
They usually recommend 1 tablet per 10kg of dog, but if you're in any doubt then just ring your vet to check.
loumabel
I did use Drontal on my two but I use Panacur liquid now as my vet recommended it and said it covers a wider range of parasites. Having said that i had no problems when we were using Drontal.
Lavenders_Blue
Thanks folks, I have double checked as suggested and it turns out you can divide the tablets so I can give 1 and a quarter which doses up to 12.5kg so I shall do that. I was only dithering because I thought 2 tablets sounded like an awful lot more wormer to give when she is only just over the weight for one tablet. Ain't Nobody Here
That sounds like a perfect solution .
Chucky Mama
I did use Drontal on my two but I use Panacur liquid now as my vet recommended it and said it covers a wider range of parasites. Whilst it does cover a few things that Drontal doesn't like Giardia (at certain worm specific doses only), it doesn't kill others like some common tapeworm species. It would be wise to worm your dog using something that treats tapeworms at least once a year (Drontal, Plerion. Milbemax(prescription only) or any other praziquantel based wormer). Personally I would be more inclined to do it the other way around and use one of these during the year and the Panacur once a year.
karlotta
I use milbemax instead of drontal as I fnd it is less likely to give mine the runs... It also means I nky have to give three tablets instead if the 6/7 they had to have each with drontal! It also guards against heartworm and lungworm if you are concerned about these... Milbemax is a smaller tablet but is prescription only so you do need to visit a vet or present a prescription at a pharmacist. Whilst it does guard against heartworm and treat lungworm, it doesn't treat lungworm at the standard dose. For lungworm a once weekly dose for 4 weeks is required. That's something vets advise when you get it... It has never crossed my mind to treat with something over the counter.. From experience I've got more confidence with vet advice than pet shops! Ie flubenvet for example.
The Dogmother
I buy our Drontal from the local pharmacy - only because it's cheaper.
Lavenders_Blue
I've just bought mine online for the same reason - sooo much cheaper!
Lavenders_Blue
I use milbemax instead of drontal as I fnd it is less likely to give mine the runs... The Drontal has been administered... and I have had the same problem. Tango has had a poorly tummy for the last 24 hours. I will check with the vet about alternative wormers next time and maybe try Milbemax instead.
