Since getting chickens the thing I have become obsessed about is the amount and volume that they poo. It's like when I had my newborns and would judge how happy they were by the number of baby poos that they did.

 

Anyway - strange obsession but there you go.

 

I've started to notice that the chickens seem to do an almightily large poo shortly after being let out of their coops in the mornings. It seems too big for their bodies. As they're getting older are they starting to get almost house-trained?

No, it's just that their systems slow down when they are roosting/asleep and once they start to move around, they need to void their bowels... bit like humans really

Perfectly normal, mine do smelly gigantipoos first thing in the morning too. Hard to believe a chicken can make that much poo

You should see a broody poo they are bigger than the chicken and stink

 

I feed a really excellent quality feed to some of my chickens, when I moved some of them on to a cheaper food to save money I noticed that the amount of poo increased significantly and smelled worse

Some of them are amazingly big, bigger than an egg Quite startling the first time you come across one in the poop tray isn't it. I'm currently a bit stunned by the size of the Twitter Sisters productions for such biddy little birds .

 

(Bit gross I know and I apologise profusely, but when I'm picking up dog poop in the garden I find that most of them turn out to be Chook poop, scarey.)

The first broody poos I saw, I was convinced I had a fox or cat coming into the area I even googled 'fox poo' images! If I hadn't seen one being erm 'pooed' I wouldn't have believed it!
