Unsecure chicken perches

I'm finding it hard to describe, but I opened the poo trays this am to check whether I needed to clean out & noticed on & around the poo seems to be transparent scaly bits - almost a bit like grains of rock salt. Any ideas ?

they sound like feather casings, when feathers come through they are contained in translucent covers (a bit like you get at the end of a shoelace) this breaks away once the feather is through

 

You most commonly see them when the birds are moulting but not always only when they are moulting

That will be it then, as one of mine has been in major moult for about 3 weeks now. Phew .....

Me too, one girl had a major moult and it was quite a shock when I first saw the scaly bits! Learning all the time

I'm learning too. I noticed this in the tray a couple of days ago and was going to look into it as I thought it had come from their legs but they looked fine. Thanks for solving the mystery
