goodinparts
Mini Meadows is lovely ...Bought 3 girls from him in the Spring. One, a salmon faverolles, got ill very soon after her arrival here and sadly died and Ben offered either to replace her free of charge there and then, or to offer me a "credit note" for another salmon faverolles when I felt the time was right. Space Chick then kindly gave me 2 beautiful frizzles & I had to say that I wouldn't have room for my salmon faverolles til 2012 & he was fine with that. The 2 pekins I bought from him in the spring are both lovely healthy girls who laid regularly all through the summer (both on a winter break now, but that's allowed!)...I would definitely recommend Mini Meadows & will go there again in the spring if I manage to integrate my ex batts into the rest of the flock and can squeeze in my salmon faverolles at last.... Tweety
How lovely to read a happy ending to your sad story. So glad that the introductions are going well - Jemima is clearly very happy with her new friends
WitchHazel
Lovely pics, gorgeous girls. J. is a real sweetie. I have a soft spot for Bluebelles, one of my first three girls was a Bluebelle. Will be interested to see a photo of the Araucana hybrid's egg when she starts laying.
majuka
Well, two days she has been here and we have now had two little green Eggs from Esmerelda, this was the first one. It was laid on the ladder in the ark, survived the ladder being lowered and three chooks climbing over it Today's was laid in the nest box though so she is learning. Nothing yet from Ella, it'll be exciting the day we find two in the nest box! Things are going well while they are free ranging but Jemima is being a bit bossy when they are in the run together. Fortunately we are able to be around quite a bit for them to be out and about and hopefully Jemima will appreciate her new friends a bit more in time... Chortle Chook
I'd read about Araucanas being full of Chillian latin blooded excentricity, and laying in odd places but to lay a nice green egg on a ladder, now that's got to be truely eggcentric majuka you have given us some tatalising glimpses of your chickens' set up. Can we see some more? That branch across another V branch looks instersting and how does that rope thing work? The latter looks like something my chickens might like and what's more it wouldn't involve me in any woodwork, hammer or nails type activities . Do they use it? WitchHazel
It was laid on the ladder in the ark She was probably caught short. It takes them a while to learn when the egg is actually going to arrive.
majuka
The pictures shows their enclosure, which they have their ark and run in. I would love to have a walk-in-run because we could do so much more in there, similar to what they have in their enclosure. Their run at present just isn't tall enough. They are only in their enclosure when we are around because it is just a fenced area, with no roof and we back onto a railway line, we have never had a fox attack but I know they must be around... The rope swing is simply tied between two trees, the only one who really used to sit and swing on it was little Georgie. I don't think any of them has used it since she went . We have a little sandpit which you can just see in the photo with Esmerelda (with the cover on). Emma used to love it, Jemima will go in there if you chuck a couple of mealworms in but it was Emma that used to spend all her time in there. Since we lost Emma in June the others haven't been as fussed and the cover has been on for a while because it has been raining. It might be worth trying with the new girls to see if they like it. The climbing frame thing, we just got a few old branches together. There are a few decking screws just to stabilise it. Emma used it a bit and Jemima climbs up there from time to time. The other girls haven't ventured up there yet! There are also a couple of loose branches in there which they climb along. When we first got hens the area they have used to have grass in there, but the girls soon took care of that so we put bags of bark chipping down from time to time, they could do with some more actually. We have a wooden human swing in there as well which we use and also Georgie and, Alisha used and Jemima still uses. They have really deep dustbaths under the swing and under the hedge. They also have access to the rest of our garden when we are around. That is just a lawned area (I use the term lawned very loosely - not sure that a prospective buyer would be impressed after our dog and the girls have been digging in there So hopefully they have a few things to keep them happy!
