4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

Hiya,

 

I have just got two more ex-battery hens to add to my current flock of two ex-batts I have had for just over a year. I have put the new chooks in the coop and run while I'm letting the older girls freerange. Overnight i'm putting the new girls in a box in the garage until they are a bit stronger (they are very naked and weak!).

 

I have one major concern at the moment though and that is the amount of noise my old girls are making! They are making a lot of very loud bock bocking all the time and I was wondering how long this will go on for as I'm worried about the neighbours.

 

Haven't had any problems with noise before!

When we have done introductions any extra noise has quickly settled down and your neighbors may not even notice or mind.

Hope it goes well and it sounds like you are going about it the right way.

That's the best way, to let them all see each other, the others are just making their presence felt. Give them a few weeks and then slowly introduce them and they will be just fine.

Its probably that there are new girls in their patch and they're just checking them out!

They should soon calm down

I introduced three new girls in August to my three old girls and the noise was so much more than it usually was I apologised to my Neighbours but they said that it wasn't a problem and they liked to hear them.

 

Although jokingly one of them called me the mad chicken lady as all he could hear from the otherside of the fence was be quiet, shut up and shush

 

But within six weeks they all became a flock and settled down.

We had the same when we introduced our 2nd set of exbatts. The original ladies made a noise like a flock of seagulls! That calmed down after a few days, and they were all merged within a month.

Thank you to everyone for the replies. They have settled down now and there is still a bit of chasing round going on they are much happier and the two new ones are getting their feathers back. Still a bit more noise than before but no complaints. Thanks again.

As others have said, it is quite normal and they will settle down quite soon. Although you are understandably concious of the extra noise, your neighbours may not have even noticed. At this time of year many people will be indoors with windows and doors shut all of the time.
