Strange noise

Recommended Posts

Fumbling about in the frost day before yesterday as I opened the hens up, I heard the strangest noises about three minutes apart.

Eeeerrrrrrrmmmooooo - mono, base tone - thought it might be the cows up the lane?

Eeeeryeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrr - a bit of tone! Elephants west of Birmingham? Yeah, like you get them east of Birmingham ... well, I was half asleep ...

Errr - errroooooo ... errr-errrrroooo ... lots of tone in all the right places - next door but three have just got a cockerel!

Apologies for the spellings - he's getting better every day!

Hi.

Snowberry, I live on the edge of a village. He's honking away every morning - I'd like to go and ask what his name is, but don't want to find out he is meant for the pot. I have four neighbours within the space of 100 yards who all keep hens but you only ever hear the four bantams - you can hear them from miles away! He's our first cockerel. Someone else did have ducks last year, but they moved away. The quacking was lovely. That doesn't count Peggy duck, who lives down the lane with her partner George. My first meeting with Peggy was when I had been having a long chat trying to convince OH to have hens. Heard this noise outside and was able to say to him, "You might not want me to have hens, but the Good Lord has just sent me a duck".

WitchHazel, OH loves our hens but he isn't too enthused about this! "Good God, what the hell is that?" from underneath his pillow, while I was bouncing around the bedroom with glee explaining it was a cockerel. It's the same when I showed him a Devil's coach horse beetle in a jam jar ... he screamed. There are some things he just doesn't do

Our cockerel was going at 6am on Thursday, stupid thing, it was pitch black outside.

Garden is out the back (obviously I guess) our bedroom is at the front, so I guess the sound was bouncing off the houses across the street back into our bedroom. Must be loud at the back, I feel sorry for the neighbours, sort of.
