chooks a go go
Following the recent monsoon-like weather we've had, which has turned our garden into a swamp - it made me wonder how long until the soil dried out and the girls could once again enjoy their regular dust bathing. Then I started to wonder what they do in winter? Is it just the natural order of things that lice etc are less prevalent in winter and therefore chickens don't need to dust bathe or should I put something in the run, under cover for them? And if so what? Hope this isn't a really dumb question...
craftyhunnypie
I use a large cat litter tray filled with either sand / the leftovers from our open fire (ashes) - or dusty soil. They just jump in and scrub behind the ears! Chickens aren't very partial to radox in their baths??? Emma.x
Lesley-Jean
I use a much deeper tub of fine sandy soil ( my chooks like to splash around a lot) with diatom added. It stays quite dry in their covered run.
chocchick
I've seen them try it in mud before, I just let them dig their own holes in and around their run. I think mites/lice are more prevailant in Summer (except Northern mite?)
Couperwife
our beautiful white little angels had a mud bath when it was chucking it down with rain we now have 4 beautiful - if a little grubby and matted angels (you cant see the mud too easily on the brown ones )
Laura & CTB
Mine have a sand filled tub in the run and are in there every couple of days summer or winter - they really do enjoy it
chooks a go go
Thanks for the info guys. lol @ the mud bathing chooks! Just one more thing - any particular type of sand? I'm guessing the bright yellow B&Q builders type stuff isn't what you mean..? Would kids sand pit type sand be okay do you think?
