We've got a new hen! She's a gingernut ranger called Chickpea.

 

A friend had a single hen left and wasn't in a position to take on more, so he's been kind enough to pass her on to us. Not so much a Chicken Of Fate (we have one of those already) - more a Chicken Of Opportunity!

 

It was a pleasure watching her reaction this afternoon when she first saw her new friends!

 

She's used to having humans around so within less than a minute of getting out of the transit box she was scratching around, and within three minutes she was attacking the food with gusto. She's in quarantine in her own eglu for a couple of weeks and then we'll start the introductions. She's opposite the WIR so she can see the existing girls, who incidentally are a bit nervous about it all - they're a bit scared of her right now.

She's a really friendly girl - she's the first girl I've had that's already used to humans and is a fully-grown hen, so it's a pleasure to see her just carry on as normal within seconds of meeting her.

 

The other thing I've missed since my last gingernut (Kiki) died is that noise they make when they find food that they like... It's lovely to hear that again!

 

I think she'll settle in nicely.
