Where can I get a clear cover for the chicken run?

Recommended Posts

We have the Eglu and the extended run. We also have the covering that goes over the run. But in my opinion this gives too much darkness for the chickens.

Where can I get a covering that is clear so my chooks don't feel so in the dark in the winter. In the summer I would obviously revert to the darker covering to keep the sun off. In the winter, they get very little sun on the run anyway to warrant any concerns about it overheating (like a greenhouse)

I did buy some decorators clear plastic sheeting, but decided not to put it on the run as it's very flimsy and the birds could peck it and suffocate on pieces of it, or jump onto the run and get their claws stuck in it. I need something stronger.

Any advice/opinions gratefully received.

Some innovative idea's here, Omlet do a 2mtr clear cover of their own but they have just told me that they won't have any in stock until the 2nd week of February  so some of these suggestions are getting me thinking now

That's useful, if Omlet do their own. Think I can hang on until then :)

I bought some corrugated clear plastic sheeting from Homebase. I used two sheets of it here and they were £9.49 each http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=110&storeId=10151&partNumber=058308

That's my DIY for the weekend. Very proud of myself

It doesn't cover the whole length of the run and I've covered the rest in Omlet's green covering.

I shall of course remove the plastic sheeting in the Spring/Summer else it will act like a Greenhouse.

That looks very neat 8):D . How have you attached it?

I drilled holes around the edges of the corrugated sheeting and attached to the run bars with string. I expect the string might wear, or get pecked at, but I can replaced it whenever. VERY pleased with it  Now my chookies won't feel like it's permanently night.

I quite often use cable ties when I'm attaching run covers, although I do have to trim them to stop my girls keep pecking at them.
