We have a 14 month old husky cross who is totally bonkers and loves everyone he meets. I met a a woman I know when out with the dogs today and she gave the dogs her hand to sniff, Finn completely backed off and didn't really want anything to do with her whilst Ozzy was really pleased to be fussed. Made me wonder do dogs sense things about people that we don't, maybe Finn is a better judge of charecter than I am.

I used to breed and show Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, still have way too many although my numbers are going down these days!

 

My top show & stud dog, Logan, was a fantastic judge of character...case in point our then babysitter, she ADORED Logan, he on the other hand loathed her! Cavaliers are by nature happy go lucky characters, very laid back, happy, happy, happy waggy tail dogs, and usually Logan too was like this with other people? So when I heard him growl very gently at her just under his breath I was taken aback and told her to back off him, she decided that she was going to win and I can hand on heart say it was the one and ONLY time I have ever seen my stud dog not only bare his teeth at any-one but also see his hackles stand on end, if I hadn't of stepped in when I did I truly think she would have been bitten

 

The babysitter, it turned out, was a nasty evil piece of work whom, once we had left the house, sat on the sofa channel surfing and getting my eldest daughter to do everything for her and had her on pain of death should she say a bad word against her!

 

So, in my humble opinion, YES dogs are a good judge of character indeed!!!

Dogs are definitely good judges of character - my Ruby is an example of that - she will growl under her breath at drunks and students smoking spliffs in the park, she doesn't like rowdy youths and will put herself between them and me, she protected me when a random bloke grabbed me in the park one morning.

 

Cyrus doesn't seem to have it - he just likes more or less everybody, but he's a bit dim

 

My last lurcher was very good - I used to leave the baby out on the patio in her pram while I was nearby or just inside; Jezebel would guard her and growl menacingly at anyone who approached the pram... except me. When I rescued 'Bel I was living in S E London and she had an unfortunate (for that area) dislike of black men ; it turned out (when I asked the rescue) that she'd been in a house of drug users and the front door was always being kicked in by yardie types, so that might explain it.
