Don't think I would have let my dogs do that. We have to walk by loose cows in the forest most days but my dogs give them a healthy wide berth.

I remember when I was in hospital after having Rosie, one of the midwives had been trampled (badly) by cows after walking her dog through their field.

I wonder why that is? Is it due to the breed of cow, or perhaps they are kept/managed differently nowadays? Or they don't get as much exposure to dogs?

 

I certainly wouldn't let Tango anywhere near cows, she is a terror for barking at anything - and chasing - and I wouldn't trust her not to start a stampede

I think they are using different, high yield breeds now and perhaps they are less docile.

 

Neither of mine are stock broken and being hunting dogs I wouldn't trust them in a field of cows - we can walk (with them on lead) in fields of sheep but I don't much trust cows and they are far bigger than me!

I think that they have far less contact with people and are handled far less. They can be quite wild now. It used to be just 1 slightly stroppy cow or bullock in a field of many that might have a go, especially if you have a dog, but now it is the majority that are stroppy. I don't take any risks any more.

I mentioned this to Phil who said that there was piece on farming Today (R4) about aggressive cows - apparently it's down to the new foreign crosses.

Aww Bless Her!! I think it was a factor of many things really, from the dog being quite young through to her very calm and submissive way with them?? But that's just my opinion is all.............
