Couperwife Posted January 30, 2012 Share Posted January 30, 2012 We have been thinking about doing this, after last summer when we went to the lakes and walked for miles, and loved every minute of it. Has anyone ever done it? Or know of people who have done it? Do you have any tips? Olly Posted January 30, 2012 Share Posted January 30, 2012 My brother-in-law did it - or rather a bit of it - a couple of years ago, his walking companion got a stomach bug and they had to finish early but he was enjoying it until then. I think they took a tent with them, I'm not sure how easy it is to find accommodation up there at suitably spaced intervals. Started in Newcastle, the initial bits weren't fab but they loved it when they got to the country. they stayed centrally and drove to the bit they finished each night then one of the group - a fell runner - would run back to the car to pick it and the group up to bring them to their accommodation. I can also recommend the tea rooms at Birdoswald, run by English Heritage and a friend of mine and great tshirts at the end of the walk too! Go for it, Cathy! rabbitfluff Posted January 31, 2012 Share Posted January 31, 2012 You'll love it. I did it 2 or 3 years ago and really enjoyed it. The first day's quite flat and a bit of a trudge but it gets better and prettier as you go along. The views on day 4 (out of 5) make the achey feet and blisters all worth it. I think you have the right idea staying in hotels. We camped, often on sites that were a bit off route, so we lost quite a bit of time trudging back and forth to campsites and taking the tent up and down. That's probably my biggest regret - that we didn't get to see as much of the interesting stuff along the route as I'd have liked. No real tips other than enjoy it. And maybe wear a lighter, comfy walking boot. I wore a big heavy robust pair, but I don't think the terrain requires it so you just end up with very achey feet. Oh and Lanacane anti chafing gel!
