Space Chick
My MIL has just taught me how to crochet, and I'm loving it (even though I am rubbish!) So, my lovely crafty Omleteers, where can I get cheap wool?
Snowy
Best places to find cheap wool are: Places like Wilkinsons or Aldi, pound shops - these often carry the cheap, nylony yarn Market stalls - a good wool stall is worth it's weight as you can get some nice yarns without paying department store prices Charity shops - for oddments Freecycle - put in a request, who knows what you will get! 'Proper' wool shops will often have a sale bin where you can get end of range, odd balls for good prices. If you need several balls for a project, your best bet is then a proper wool shop or department store as you can then get all the balls you need in the same batch number, but if you want oddments for granny squares, then it doesn't matter where you get them from! Having said that, if you wanted to do something like a blanket, you would get the best result if you used the same yarn throughout. Find a yarn with a good selection of colours such as Patons Dreamtime - on line stores are good for this. I use McA http://www.mcadirect.com/shop/index.php
Space Chick
Thanks Snowy I got 4 balls for £4 in Lidl yesterday, but not many colours.
MummyHen
You will love crochet - what are you going to make? A few tips for you - if you haven't found them already 1. join ravelry - you have to sign up but it’s free and there are loads of groups to join for all different fibre crafts 2. read some blogs by some inspirational hookers - i.e. crochet with Raymond, Attic24, little tin bird - if you find any of these they have links to other blogs. There's a group on ravelry that follow Attic24 'We love Lucy' - which has some lovely ideas on what to crochet 3. as for yarn - you can get anything from inexpensive acrylic (I favour Stylecraft Special DK - heaps of colours, its soft, washes well) to the very expensive 100% wool, wool silk alpaca combos - there’s no end of options i.e. Debbie Bliss, Rowan, Rico to the small producers Meadow Craft Yarns etc 4. Places to buy cheap yarn - high street, department stores but I usually get the best deals online if I want a specific yarn I will search the best price and its usually on line You won't regret taking up the hook
Space Chick
I have a few ideas of what I can do I'm going to start off simple.... Have started something that was going to be a scarf, but it's gone a bit wrong so I think I'll make it into a bag Other ideas... In time... I'd love to do a blanket with granny squares and a poncho... But baby steps It's got me tempted to knit again too, I havent done that since primary school I can remember how to cast on and knit, forgotten pearl and cast off... But that's what the Internet is for
ClaireG
I got some real nice wool in The Range earlier. It's Patons Smoothie DK.
craftyhunnypie
Space Chick - we can always have a crochet 'meet up' when I'm a bit better. Would be really nice! Can help you make a granny square etc. Charlies stores in Aberystwyth & various other places sell wool. Good Haberdashery shop in Aber also sell a few oddments of wool, or Claire wools in Aber & also online! I quite like using Stylecraft DK for a lot of crochet work. The colour names are lovely & a good choice - it's reasonable too for 100gram ball. Emma.x
craftyhunnypie
Ooo I believe there is a ' Range' shop in Carmarthen. Ooo! I am a woolaholic! Perhaps we should have a wool swap on Omlet? Emma.x

PurpleTree
Debs, have you a Shaws near you? Was in the one near me the other day, they had loads including lots reduced. Haven't noticed any in the Range near me, but haven't been in for a while. Have bought in Wilkinsons in the past and Lidls recently, but theirs comes and goes. My mum just found a load in her attic and gave it to me, but the colours are a bit boring and thin, so I'm on the lookout.
Space Chick
My MIL has told me about Shaws... The one in Neath doesn't have much, but Swansea has a lot... Thinking of sending OH in his lunch break as its only down the road from his office Was given the heads up by a friend about some lovely 100g balls on special at Hobbycraft for £1.69..... I may have bought a ball or two Ruth - I went to the Swansea one, but there is one by Cardiff City Stadium... Maybe pop there before your Valentines treat
