Pekin and Silkie questions

Recommended Posts

CC I'd say your Silkies are inbetweenies but to be honest that's not a bad thing at all, it doesn't make them any less nice :D if people don't want to show them it doesn't matter, I recently got some cuckoo silkies from a lovely lady near Peterborough I wonder if it's the same lady?

My mini silkies are about the same size as my DeGrubbe bantams (rumpless D'Anvers) in body size but are a tiny bit taller and fluffier

My laptop is broken so I can't post a pic but somewhere on the forum is a pic of my mini Silkies in front of my kitchen tiles which gives an idea of size

CNM there may be silkies and pekins for sale at the Reading show this weekend :D

:shock::shock::twisted:

Ooo, ooo, ooo!

But if I come home empty handed I might throw a tantrum. And I remember reading posts about people not knowing how to buy at shows. I'd be one of those people.

Now to get an Eglu before the weekend... hmmm...

*Mind is working over-time*

Debs is going isn't she... I believe soooo!

I have come around to the idea of having large fowl Silkies, the pics posted are very encouraging. :)

You won't be disappointed  I just think they are so exotic and to have such a lovely creature in my garden is a delight. When I lift them up I feel as if I have an small emu or similar under my arm  ....it's something to do with the way they move their heads....and as I mentioned before they sound so nice. I imagine the larger ones will be more robust and I wanted to give mine a chance when coming up against the hybrids. I think mine are particularly large fowl, Redwing knows where I got them from. I wish you were nearer and could come to see them.

Me too! I would love to see them. Maybe you could move house  .

I'm trying to find suppliers, see what they have in what colours at what age etc etc. :) I've been told Pekins are noisy so I''m going from decided to undecided, to decided again and once more undecided! However, large fowl silkies are still on the list. I need an emu.

Hopefully someone in your area can point you in the right direction. I was so lucky that the breeder was coming to the show and was able to bring my girls as there was no way I would have been able to travel to Derbyshire  It is good that your OH likes to travel. Mine took me on a four hour round trip to get my spare eglu so I can't complain :D I have been looking at cubes on ebay but I really don't need one :? I would love to get more hens but I don't want to annoy the neighbours especially as when I was about to start hen keeping I told them I was only going to get two.....well that was true until I got another two

I was looking at chicken videos on youtube (as one does) and came across one about "Soukie white silkie" you can hear her burbling on it...so sweet.

Was watching a couple of cubes on ebay, the ones that Omlet, refurbished but they are really costly. If I got one it would be like a sort of Omlet village out in the garden

I know what you mean about getting two hens  I am just not sure if the house deeds allow for hens here and so I don't want to get too many as they may be noisy and cause the neighbours to look into it :? Was telling OH about a magazine I had bought which had information about keeping Alpacas 8) What would the neighbours think of that  OH said not to buy that type of magazine again

Glad you liked the video :D Are you thinking about silkies all the time yet....it is a terrible affliction

I think it's a damn cheek for neighbours to complain about a few hens to be honest with you. Especially when "Ooops, word censored!"ody thinks twice about a barking dog, walking a crying/yelping dog down the street and standing outside your house with it early hours of the morning so that lay-ins are impossible. I just think of all of the noises that we put up with on a day-to-day basis, a few hens is nothing, and much, much nicer! (Can you tell there's a trouble-making neighbour with a noisy dog on my street?)

I am thinking about my new Eglu and chickens a lot, yes, I admit it, you've caught me out! Definitely silkies. I am currently in contact with a couple of people about a few girls.

Now to decide on an Eglu colour. It is impossible!!

Edit: Colour-choosing will probably be easier now as I am getting a 2nd Go instead of a Classic. Having a small garden and a small WIR, access to eglu for egg collecting and cleaning will be much easier with the Go, which is what we already have there... with no problems.

I really like the two classics I have, but I have not seen a "Go" in the flesh. Keep us posted about your possible new arrivals....how exciting :D

I like the Classic's deeper nesting box and the shape of the run, but I won't be buying a run anyway. I'll be using the Go run because I already have that, in storage. I can pull out one draw at the back of the Go and clean everything out much more easily than with the Classic. I have limited WIR space and door access so the easier the better. Plus 2 Gos would be matching.

I'm waiting to hear back from a couple of people.
