jackian
We had 2 new additions 5 weeks ago Eva and Rosie , . After all the usual introductions ..squabbles , pecking , screaming etc., they are now all friends. Here is where my question comes in ...Hope you don't get too confused. hang on in there ! Clover is top chick with her mate Poppy second in command.(they are the 2 oldies) Eva and Rose are the newbies. Eva has been getting closer to the oldies. Rose is the smallest so i would say that she would be bottom chick...that leaves Eva . We have 2 coups due to the fact of them being seperate for a while, Usually The 2 oldies go in the old coup and the 2 newbies in the new coup. Tonight Rosie went in first as usual in the new coup . Then Clover and Poppy went in the old coup as usual... Eva stood hovering outside ther new coup and then went back wards and forwards between them ,neck stretched outside each one thinking "hhhhm now Rose is with me but I want her to be bottom of the pecking order , should I be pally pally with the other 2 to make sure she is ? " or " Do you know I can't stand sleeping with her a minute longer she snores" after a lot of thinking she went into the old coup with the other 2 leaving Rose on her own ... auntielizzie
They do seem to think sometimes, but only for very short periods You can see the little cogs going round in Betty's head when she's thinking about jumping up on the nest box in order to jump on the run roof so that she can fly into the garden She only does this every couple of weeks normally, so I guess she forgets inbetweentimes
Chortle Chook
I know there has been some work done on seagulls making decisions. Apparently when they can't make up their mind between two things they start to play with the pebbles at their feet. It is called 'displacement activity'. I've not seen my chooks showing 'displacement activity', but I have seen my OH showing it when asked to make a profound decision e.g. what to buy in the supermarket
