welovemarmite
I know you are meant to keep your puppy on the food your breeder fed him, and if you make any changes to do it slowly. But i have just read about one make of dog food was hte equivalent of feeding it mcdonalds. Stan the man is on pedigree chum.... is that ok? Am happy to change if need be, but that is what we were sent home with by the breeder.
kinsk
Yes the advice is to change gradually but if it was my puppy I would ditch the pedigree chum and swop immediately. I don't mean to be harsh but I wouldn't think much of a breeder that feeds that either. Steer well clear of bakers too, and don't assume that some of the more expensive feeds, eukanuba etc. are much better either. I swear by James Wellbeloved and the natures own sachets, the natures own stuff is approved by the BARF diet people.
welovemarmite
Thanks, apparently he was on vitalin but turned his nose up at it and swapped to pedigree chum. I will get something else for him. Our of interest has anyone tried garvo dog food? I tried the cat food and mine love it. I went by the principal that if their chicken food is well regarded then it would hopefully apply to the cat food too!
Redwing
I dont know if the Garvo dog food is supposed to be good or bad but my dog likes it and did well on it, we did swap away from it though as he eats so little the bag went out of date before he could even get half way down it I find that some dog owners can get rather evangelical about food and discussions on some of the pet forums can get very forceful with people being made to feel they are letting their dog down which is a real shame I feed my dog a reasonable quality dry feed, some raw feed, Chappie, Wainwrights tray food and Hi Life sachets so a mix of quality The tray foods seem to be quite good quality, look for a high percentage of meat rather than the bog standard 4% offered by some of the normal brands
welovemarmite
Thanks, he is just on dry complete food at the mo, and will probably keep him on dry for the time being. Its just really hard to get through the minefield. When it comes to cats and chickens I know what i am doing, this is just all new to me!! Lavenders_Blue
Redwing is spot on - some of the dog forums are very scary places with people being made to feel like bad owners if they don't feed certain brands of food, or raw food. Basically, as long as you remember that dogs are essentially carnivores (although will and can process other foods) and therefore need a high % of meat in their diet, you won't go far wrong. Check the ingredients on the backs of packets and look for a high % meat content and as few grains as possible which don't add a lot to the diet and are used to bulk the food out. Which Dog Food is quite a decent website but may or may not leave you more confused than before!
welovemarmite
well i got some james wellbeloved and he has had it for his lunch. He rather likes it!
Jules.
well i got some james wellbeloved and he has had it for his lunch. He rather likes it! Lily has James Wellbeloved too & she loves it. When we took her to the vet to be microchipped she asked what food was Lily on & she was pleased with what we were feeding her. It reminded me a bit of the first time I took my human babies to the weighing clinic & I was asked what milk I was feeding them
The Dogmother
I sometimes feed their fish and rice kibble along with their main raw diet; it goes down well. Fish4dogs and Jon Angell are both very good and well regarded. You might want to avoid anything with wheat in as some dogs are intolerant and it can upset their tums. Have a read of the ingredients as even some of the fish kibbles or tinned food contain (ex-battery) chicken. Also be aware of the amount of 'padding' in the food as this will greatly increase the amount of poo that comes out of t'other end all sense really, just find summat they like and stick to it. BTW I total agree with you about some dog forums... they can be very scary
welovemarmite
Thanks, it is all scarey. The dog food website was useful information. I will see how he goes on this and then take it from there. If he is ok on it i will leave him on it. He is still very very cute...
The Dogmother
Tell you what they really love as treats... tinned pilchards in tomato sauce really good for them too.
Lavenders_Blue
Tell me about it! I give Tango tinned plchards now and again as part of her dinner and the squeaks of excitement as I open the tin are deafening!
Guest
Tell me about it! I give Tango tinned plchards now and again as part of her dinner and the squeaks of excitement as I open the tin are deafening! I ordered pilchards and tuna for Tanner with my shopping this week - will try them out on him later! I bought the ones in oil as he has dry skin and thought it would help! Is he going to have stinky fish breath later!
The Dogmother
Mine don't especially, but then I don't snog them! watch out for them wiping their chops on your trousers though
Lavenders_Blue
Tango has just had pilchards for tea tonight and, in the interests of science, I have stuck my nose in her gob There is a faint fishy whiff but definitely not overpowering. As DM says though, no snogs here!

The Dogmother
Pilchards and sardines are good, once or twice a week at the most but avoid tuna as it is thirst-making. I add cod liver oil to their food each day and it keeps their coats shiny, it also helps Cyrus' creaky joints.

Oh Cyrus doesn'r arf sing when he smells the pilchards going on his breakfast I can't advise much as all of our puppies go straight onto raw as soon as they come to use. The Dogmother
you've discovered his soup dragon song then? He starts as soon as he sees that red tin come out of the cupboard.... and does that daft tap dance of his. Ruby just licks her lips and looks excited. kinsk
My old collie used to go mad for tinned pichards, he adored them. New collie (not that new he's 11 now ) loves them too, once he's wolfed them down he does his rug wriggle, wiping his chops all over the run and just generally wriggling around on it. It's our secret treat though as if he has it whilst rottie is around all hell breaks loose. I would recommend James Wellbeloved to anyone, it's certainly suits my collie after he had a reaction to something, and my sister in law has put her puppies on it after they had a reaction to eukanuba. What I would not reccomend is a diet of pig "Ooops, word censored!" and pig food which our rottie gorged himself on yesterday afternoon and has been like a bloated whale ******** through the eye of a needle
lillybettybabs
Before we went to BARF we used Nature Diet which is very good, The only dried food i will feed if i needed to is orijen.
The Dogmother
My two quite like that too, but it's expensive so I use it as high value treats as the scent of it is quite strong.
Lavenders_Blue
I agree Naturediet is excellent (and Tango LOVES it) but a wee bit pricey even on the bulk buy deals online. At the moment I am feeding Tango Applaws kibble for breakfast which I stocked up on with the recent 50% off vouchers. This also smells very strong and meaty, then she has raw for dinner. When I get my dog freezer (ie when I manage to make room in the garage around all the 'man stuff') I will have room to store raw meat and then can switch fully to BARF. At the moment I have only a tiny freezer so no room to store barely any meat
