alexandtom
We were away for a week and our chickens who usually are let out to roam the garden every day had to stay in their cube and run whilst under the kind watchful eye of our neighbours. They are fiends for worms and slugs usually . Seemingly they decided on a break for freedom (Margo is the main suspect and clearly the ring leader). They have been tunnelling for freedom from the inside of the run . Luckily the plans were thwarted by our chicken sitters but now the lawn does rather look like a bomb site. I guess this is pretty normal and since we have been back they have only been digging around whilst roaming free. Does anyone think that maybe they were bored ? Any tips for confined chicken entertainment? These chickens are definitely a big part of our family now, I can't tell enough people how great they are-though none of you need telling that! Happy laying. Alex
Egluntyne
They like to dig to create home made dust baths. I don't think they will have formed an escape committee! If you watch them they will all pile into the craters and squirm and luxuriate in the dirt.
The Dogmother
Alex, I am just going to move this post to the chicken forum, where it will get more traffic. I hope that's ok
chocchick
Mine have dug up the edges of the run and created a hill in the middle, I think they just like it like that Digging is their entertainment. It's probably OK as long as it doesn't make it easier for a fox to get in.
buffie
Yes they love to dig, I think they could have climbing frames and home cinema and they'd still dig BBx
Olly
I take it there wasn't a vaulting-horse in the middle of the run, concealing the end of the tunnel ? mine have created a dust-bath nearly eight inches deep under a tree, they love to roll around in it. They don't dig inside the run though, and they are in there most of the time. I think the ground is so hard after four months of being trampled, they'd need a pneumatic drill!
